Data Protection

Data protection has two key aspects: loss prevention and privacy. We need to keep our data, but we need to keep it to ourselves! Loss is prevented with systematic backups and privacy is accomplished by taking the proper security measures to protect it.

Security

We use computers for everything from banking and investing to shopping and communicating with others through e-mail or chat programs. Even if you don't consider your communications "top secret," you probably do not want strangers reading your e-mail, using your computer to attack other systems, sending forged e-mail from your computer, or examining personal information stored on your computer (such as financial statements).

Here is a list of recommended security measures:

  1. Install and Use Anti-Virus Programs
  2. Keep Your System Patched
  3. Use Care When Reading Email with Attachments
  4. Install and Use a Firewall Program
  5. Make Backups of Important Files and Folders
  6. Use Strong Passwords
  7. Use Care When Downloading and Installing Programs
  8. Install and Use a Hardware Firewall
  9. Install and Use a File Encryption Program and Access Controls

A great resource outlining these steps is available from CERT, a center of Internet security expertise operated by Carnegie Mellon University.

JTech can help you implement these measures and more to give you security and peace of mind in your home or your business.

Data Backup

Our digital data can be precious to us. Whether it's a client database, financial records, a photograph collection, or family genealogy records, there is data we have that would be more than "inconvenient" to lose.

If your hard drive crashed right NOW, would it only be an inconvenience? Or would you lose irreplaceable data that should have been backed up to a safe place.

A backup strategy might involve CD/DVD's, a backup hard drive, another computer, or even a network storage device. Let us help you avoid heart ache by providing you with a backup plan that works for you.

Complete Backup

Another service we can perform is a complete backup to CD or DVD of your hard drive.

Over time programs are loaded, settings are changed, and the computer becomes customized to your needs and liking. At this point, even if you have your critical data backed up it can be quite a hardship to start from scratch.

After a complete backup if your hard drive fails a replacement can be reloaded from the CD/DVD and your computer will start up just as it was when the backup was made.

Recovery

Data recovery is the last line of defense. With a good backup plan it should never come to this. You did have a backup plan, didn't you?

Regardless, sometimes things fail and we have to resort to recovery. JTech has experience recovering data from failed hard drives, flash drives, and even digital camera memory cards.

Did you format your cameras memory only to find out that you hadn't stored those vacation pictures? There's a good chance we can still recover them for you.

Data Transfers

Upgrading to a new computer? Wouldn't it be nice to transfer your personal data, settings, and preferences from your old one?

JTech can do it for you. We can move your system and application settings, preferences, data files, e-mails, music files, video files and digital pictures. Don't leave the good stuff behind.
